4 Tips to Prepare for Air Conditioning Season

Summer may seem like it’s in the far future away. But before you realize, you’ll be switching from heating to cooling. Soon enough your air conditioner is running regularly to maintain comfy temperatures. It’s beneficial to be ready for the more usage before temperatures get warmer.

Service Experts Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing and our team of Experts can help. We’ve designed our comprehensive air conditioning memberships to maximize your system’s energy efficiency and reliability. Our professional knowledge goes a long way, but there are a lot of other things you can do to protect your air conditioner. Here are four of the top ways you can prep for air conditioning season.

1. Clean Your Air Conditioner

Don’t worry, you won’t have to disassemble your system and clean every component. Our Experts handle this during your yearly air conditioning maintenance appointment.

But cleaning the surroundings around your air conditioner will go a long way too. We advise:

    • Getting rid of twigs, leaves and grass clippings from the outside of your air conditioner.
    • Keeping neighboring grass and plants trimmed back.
    • Maintaining at minimum 1 foot of free room on all sides around your air conditioner.

If your air conditioner’s fins get full of dirt or yard refuse, this can decrease performance and comfort. Your air conditioner will have to run more often to deliver the same level of comfort. In extreme cases, it may stop running altogether and need air conditioning repair.

Your comfort and satisfaction are important to us, so we want to minimize the possibility of repairs in the first place. A clean air conditioner usually cools more efficiently, is less likely to need repairs and typically lasts longer.

2. Change Your Air Filter

Regularly replacing your air filter is important for your air conditioner’s wellness. During a tune-up visit, our professionals examine filters and replace them if needed. Replacing the filter is quick and straightforward. You can (and should) do it on your own whenever!

How frequently you need to get a new filter depends on:

    • The type of filter you use.
    • If someone in your house has asthma, allergies or other respiratory issues.
    • If you have pets.

Basic flat filters usually last for 30–60 days. Deeper pleated filters can last up to 90 days. If you’re not sure if your filter requires replacement, remove it, and tilt it toward the light. Put in a new one if you can’t see light through it.

Filters catch dust, pollen and other contaminants from your residence’s air, keeping airflow clean. Neglecting it will decrease your residence’s indoor air quality and your air conditioner’s efficiency.

In some instances a blocked filter might even damage your system or cause it to break down. Frequently changing it will keep the inside of your air conditioner cleaner and airflow more balanced.

If someone in your household suffers from allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems, ask our Experts about how a HEPA filter can relieve symptoms.

3. Inspect Your Thermostat and Smoke Detectors

Now is a great time to evaluate other important parts of your air conditioner and other safety systems.

If you have a programmable thermostat, ensure that it’s operating like it should. If the batteries are getting low, get new ones.

For extra control and convenience, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. They make saving energy simpler. And select models can even notify you if there’s an issue with your air conditioner or if your air filter needs replacement.

Although they’re not part of your air conditioning system, now is an excellent time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Confirming they still work offers peace of mind and an added layer of safety.

4. Keep Heat Outside

One of the smartest ways to enhance energy-efficient cooling is to decrease the level of outside heat getting into your residence. Using good window treatments such as blackout curtains, honeycomb shades or plantation shutters, can block the sun from influencing your home’s temperatures.

Here are a few other ways to keep your residence chilly without adjusting the thermostat:

    • Run ceiling fans when you’re in the room.
    • Turn on your bathroom fan to eliminate heat and humidity when you shower.
    • Keep air vents clean to ensure proper airflow.
    • Use caulk and weatherstripping to seal your doors and windows.
