So you’ve recognized that it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioning system to a more energy efficient system. Congratulations! You’re buying in to your family’s comfort as well as the reduction of your energy costs and responsible consumption of energy. While those are all great things there are still a few more things you can do to ready your Columbia home before you get going with the air conditioning installation process.
1. Review the Manual J Heating and Cooling Load
First of all, the AC contractor should have done what’s called a heating and cooling load calculation. This intricate calculation takes into account the home’s structure, roof, windows, direction and location to determine the size and type of equipment needed. Ask to see the load calculation and have it broken down for you. If the contractor did what’s referred to as a Block Assessment, or did not complete a load calculation at all, we would strongly recommend selecting another contractor or calling Midland Air Service Experts at 803-399-7208. Your Columbia HVAC expert will be able to provide you a full assessment.
2. Clean and Seal Ducts.
Next, have the company clean your ductwork. It’s not recommended to introduce caked on dirt and dust from a decades old duct system to your brand new air conditioning system. The health of your complete system and the quality of the air you breathe kicks off with your ducts providing clean air, so make sure that they are cleaned and properly sealed by the HVAC contractor. If you can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned or have never had them cleaned, have the contractor do a duct cleaning before your new AC installation.
3. Clear a Path.
Prior to the air conditioner installation you will also want to clear the area where equipment will be installed, and ensure it is easy to access. There are stairs, landscaping porches, decks or other objects close to the AC, clear the area as best as you can. Make certain the area is clear of yard waste like big sticks and leaf piles so installation is even easier. Also make sure to clear away anything else that could get in your installation pro’s way such as garden hoses, rakes, or children’s toys. Make sure pets are confined so they do not get in the way of the installation crew.
