Hot Water When You Want It
A tank water heater keeps a storage of water perpetually heated so it’s always available whenever you need it. The volume of the tank can vary from 20 to 80 gallons, and most families do well enough with a 40- or standard 50-gallon tank.
When the dishwasher, washing machine or shower is running, hot water is drained from the top of the tank and directed wherever you need it. The water heater then draws cold water into the bottom of the tank and begins the heating process in another cycle to replenish the supply.
Tank water heaters are generally less expensive to purchase and install than other water heaters. Even though tankless water heaters often offer superior energy efficiency, a tank water heater can still be an efficient choice, especially if you choose an ENERGY STAR®-rated model.
